Elder Futhark rune Sowilo4/17/2024 This would involve casting or throwing rune stones and interpreting the patterns and symbols that appeared, much like the practice of reading tarot cards or other forms of fortune-telling. In addition, runes were also used in divination or the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or unknown by supernatural means. These charms would provide protection, attract luck or fortune, or even ward off evil energy or spirits. These are sometimes referred to as “charms”. Runes are believed to have magical powers and were often used in mystical and religious practices by the Vikings. There are many more runestones out there, with most of them concentrated within Scandinavia, but some have also been founded in other parts of Europe as well. It was discovered in Gotland in 1903 and is now in the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm.įor more on Viking remains in Sweden, read our post on Where to find Vikings in Sweden. The Kylver stone, also located in Sweden, is a smaller runestone that dates back to about 400 AD. It was discovered in the 19th century and is said to contain stories that relate to Norse mythology. In Sweden, the Rök Runestone is one of the most famous examples of runic inscriptions. The Jelling Stones, in Jelling, Denmark, are a pair of large runestones erected in the 10th century by the Viking king Harald Bluetooth.įor more on visiting Denmark’s Viking remains, see Viking attractions around Copenhagen. These are found in many places in Scandinavia, but some of the most famous runic inscriptions lie in Denmark and Sweden. The Jelling Stones / Erik Christensen (CC) This alphabet contains only 16 characters and emerged during the 9th century, following a transitional period spanning the 7th and 8th centuries.Īs we mentioned before, runes were used for inscriptions on a wide range of objects, including weapons, tools and jewellery.īut perhaps the most well-known examples are the runestones. Younger Futhark is a runic script that originated from the Elder Futhark but is a more simplified version. These inscriptions date back to the 2nd to the 10th centuries, making the Elder Futhark a remarkable and significant archeological discovery. We know the Elder Futhark was used because we have found inscriptions on various objects such as jewellery, amulets, plate ware, tools, weapons and runestones in Scandinavia. It’s believed that the Germanic tribes used the Elder Futhark runes during the Migration Period to record Northwest Germanic dialects. The Elder Futhark, also referred to as the Old Futhark, or Germanic Futhark, is the earliest version of the runic alphabets. Let’s go over each group and explore the differences between them, as well as their individual alphabets. There are two main groups or types of Viking runes: the Elder Futhark and the Younger Futhark. The vast majority of these runes are inscriptions on stones, pieces of wood or bones.īut runes have also been found on metal objects, such as weapons and jewellery, showing that they were widely understood and permeated many aspects of Viking life. How many confirmed examples of Viking runes have been found?Īround 6,000 confirmed examples of Viking runes have been found across Scandinavia and other areas where the Vikings settled or traded. Cool, right?įor more on specific Viking symbols, read our guides to the Vegvisir symbol and the Valkyrie symbol – two of the best-known symbols from Viking culture. The Vikings used these runes to write down messages and sometimes even to cast magic spells. If you’re still confused, think about it like this: the symbols in the Latin alphabet are called letters, but in the Germanic alphabet, they are called runes. These symbols make up the writing system that was used by the Vikings and other Germanic peoples in the early Middle Ages. Runes are essentially individual symbols or characters that represent specific sounds and meanings. So put on your Viking helmets and let’s explore the history and cultural significance of Viking runes, as well as the different types of runes and the various ways in which they were used. Beersmith 3 acid additions4/17/2024 Added new option under Options->Brewing to make it easier to import a language XML file to use BeerSmith in other (non english) languages. The ability to customize cloud views with most recipe fields including recipe date for better sorting/management of cloud folders.New Backup/Restore from Zip on file menu for easy backup.Dry hop additions can not specify time of addition and length of addition and they also now show up on the calendar.Support for “sparge” grains – a technique used where dark grains are added at the end of the mash/early sparge to reduce harshness. You can now import TILT hydrometer/temperature data from either a CSV file or Google Spreadsheet link directly into your session data.New pH acid model options to select either MPH or BW models.Moved default data storage default away from Documents directory in the interest of better security.Incremental transaction based data system that is more secure, less prone to data loss in the event of a crash or computer shutdown. The plot of roasted malt pH versus color looks more like a scatter diagram, which may be indicative of the base malt used or process differences in the kilning/roasting. It is a slight error, but they all tend to add up after a while. Likewise, my data sense indicates that making a straight line regression for caramel/crystal malts introduces another error into the mix. I currently have a few pounds of several base malts that I plan on doing some testing on to see how much scatter there is in their contribution to mash pH. My main issue is the wide range of pH results from base malts in general and the programs sort of lumping them all into one category. There does seem to be a difference with the way they calculate the acid contributions, but neither is really too far off the mark that it is unusable. At this same acid content of the malt, Bru'n water ended up well below my actual results. In the end, I calculated that increasing the acid content value of the malt to a little above 3% brought the pH prediction from BeerSmith into alignment with my actual results. Overall, it seems like all of the water adjustment tools are lacking somewhat when it comes to the use of acidulated malt. You can see my analysis of a pilsner recipe which I had brewed a couple of times and measured pH with and without acidulated malt on this thread: so I always recommend actually measuring your mash pH and adjusting again if needed. In the real world a lot of factors come into play that we don't really know including the actual acidity of each grain addition, the precise composition of your water, crush of the grain, etc. That being said - these are models folks. When using any model, I do the research first and pick the best one I can find which I did in this case. If you read the paper and understand the chemistry involved, you will see why the other models have problems and why I went with the one I did. I've already had a number of people ask me why didn't I just make my model match the BNW (or EZ Water, or KW or pick your favorite tool)? This is a pretty significant problem with BNW - not the other tools. In fact it calculates almost double the acidity change (which means half the acid needed) for the particular comparison case with phosphoric that the other water tools or models did. If you go to page 7 you will see the acidity delta in the table changes pretty dramatically with BNW for phosphoric, meaning it will calculate a lot less phosphoric. BeerSmith uses the model described in the paper which does include the effects of acid density: I've discussed this in other threads, but the here's a comparison of the models (page 7). BNW ignores the acid density which has a particularly large effect when using phosphoric acid. Aural training intervals4/17/2024 Learning your intervals this way will help you to quickly find the intervals without having to replay the song in your head. Once you are comfortable with this then move on to the other method of playing and humming the intervals. My personal opinion would be to make a song list first so that you can hear the differences in the intervals. Once your brain learns theses intervals you will be able to tell quickly what interval is being played.īoth the song list method and the scale degree method are useful in learning musical intervals. Using the scale degree method you are programming your brain to recognize an interval based on the starting note. Listen for what each interval sounds like and put that into your memory. Try and notice the difference between a major third and a perfect fourth. try and tell the difference between each interval. When using this method listen closely to each interval. Once you feel confident with a major second play a major third and do the same process. Then check your accuracy by playing the interval. Then hum the interval without playing it. Now hum along while you play the interval. Once you’ve found the root play a major second. This note is the first note in the scale. In this method you need to sit down at the piano or your preferred instrument and find the root or tonic note. If you use the scale degree method then you can easily remember what the interval is in a shorter amount of time. If you use the song method then you have to go through each of the songs and find the one that matches the interval. It can e harder though when you are trying to figure out an interval quickly. Making a song list is helpful because it is a quick way to remember intervals. Musical Intervals trough scale degrees is the better of the two ways yo learn intervals. Practice these everyday so you can quickly recognize them. Now that you have your song list practice each of the intervals and how it sounds in the song. There’s No Business Like Show Business (Notes 2 and 3) Here is my song list that helps me with my intervals Interval Because intervals go up and down you need to have a song for both of these. Using songs you know well will make it easier to recognize the interval quickly.Īlso make sure you make an ascending list and a descending list. When making a song list you should use songs that you are very familiar with. For example the first interval in Amazing Grace is a Perfect Fourth. This song list is made up of different familiar songs that the first few notes in the song has a certain interval. You might not be able to recognize the interval right away but with time and practice this method will ingrain the intervals into your brain so that you can easily name a certain interval.įirst is making a song list. Using scale degrees is harder but in the long run is better. You will only be able to tell the interval once you go through each of the songs in your list which is time consuming and hard. However, this way will not make you great at intervals. The song list is great for a quick and easy way to recognize intervals. First is making song list and second is using scale degrees.Įach of these has positives and negatives. There are two ways to teach yourself musical intervals. Or get two copies and use the first one as a rough draft. Write out responses on a separate sheet of paper before completing the real application.
